The side flaps on the front of my Series D have finally given up the ghost, one has split and the other is holding on by a thread. I'm debating what to do. I think I could replace them if I can find some suitable material. Or I could just remove them entirely, I see many cameras this way. I think I'd take the door off as well. How is the door hinge attached to the front standard? Are there screws under the leather? Has anyone else done something similar, either removal or replacement of the side wings?

The side curtains are sandwiched into the door and held in place with metal strips at the body. The hinge screws are under the leather. The side curtains tear from opening the door and allowing it to spring open.
I have bonded shutter curtain material or black rip stop nylon or similar material to the existing curtains with fabric glue.
If the door end is failing bond the new fabric to the door.
The side curtains block stray light from entering the lens like a lens hood.
