I recently bought a Crown Special and discovered a fresnel focusing screen along side the groundglass. Since I haven't used one of these cameras since the 70's,(that one did not have a fresnel) what is the story here? Is the fresnel a factory installed item, or one a previous owner put in? Is it really necessary? I can't stand to look at the concentric lines while focusing. Can I simply take it out or does this screw up the focal plane? My guess is that it would change the focus if i take it out.

Since the Ektalite Field screen (as Graflex called it) is between the ground glass and the lens, you'll have to shim the glass the thickness of the fresnel in order to keep the ground glass in register with the film holders.
Beyond that it's not necessary, but it does give a more even image on the ground glass, which makes for easier composing and focusing without a loupe.
With a loupe those pesky rings are quite visible and a major distraction. _________________ "In order to invent, you need a good imagination and a lot of junk" Thomas Edison |
