Something has been said about Burke & James buying up second rate or reject lens elements and assembling them.
How would one identify them?

I am aware that they used the name Carl Meyer to confuse people into thinking they were getting a product of a major manufacturer.
So how did they make people think they were getting a lens from the German (or US) Goerz company.

B&J bought out Goerz Berlin's stock. They sold lenses from a major German manufacturer. With no guarantee that the cells had passed inspection or were properly mounted in barrel or shutter. But the glasses and sometimes complete cells had been made in Berlin by Goerz.

So are the B&J Dagors readily identifiable by the nature of the markings?
I takeit that not all of them might be garbage, but they might be very variable in quality.
