I just bought a Pacemaker Speed Graphic, with all the kit, that previously belonged to a Fleet Street photographer. I'm told his name was Robert Hope, and that he was reasonably well known. Does anyone know anything about him, or know where I could find anything on him? I've tried search engines (useless!), and Fox Talbot. Any ideas anyone? |

Hi,There,
As an old Fleet Street man myself from the '60's the name slightly rings a bell, but only slight remember.Your best bet would be contact A.P. or Reuters, they where the main news agencies in those days.Others went to the wall or swallowed up by Hultons. If not,you could always write to the NUJ,the press union or the newspapers themselves.
On the otherhand,a lot of them have closed over the years-so try the union,Im sure they could help. You will find the address in the Writers & Artists year book or on the internet.
Most press boys used the companies cameras,in this case he could have been using his own.A lot of press in the 40's & 50's were using the 'anniversary' model with the Ektar lens.Later came the English version, the MICRO-PRESS,with the 135mm Schneider Xenar lens, before the Rolleiflex took over.
Drop me a private message, let me know how you get on.Announce beforehand at this space.Happy shooting,Oh,and people will still say,"Press" if they see the camera.
It's not forgotten and still alive in peoples memories. |

If you don't get a response by email, try normal mail, they might appreciate that better.
Emails tend to get 'overlooked' or lost in transmission, that really does happen.
Happy shooting (..and watch the faces around you). |

Looks extremely unlikely of getting a Graphic into the games now...without it being dismantled by the police.
Even today Im now holding back from taking the Graphics anywhere near London because of security checks. It's back to 35mm at the moment until the heat recedes.
A large black box is'nt a favourite sight with the people here at present. |
