I need to buy a flatbed scanner for general purposes, but would like to consider a model that will allow me to scan 4x5 sheet film (color and B&W). I'm looking at less expensive models (under $500). Can anyone recommend an inexpensive scanner the will do both sheet film and regular paper copying? Obviously, I want the highest film copy quality at the lowest price. Any Suggestions? |

Also check recent issues of Shutterbug magazine. They've reviewed a number of flatbeds in the last year. They also have a website. Their usual reviewer for digital equipment is David Brooks, who is quite knowledgeable.
I'm using an Epson 1600 Expression with firewire hookup into a PowerMac G4. Quite happy with my set-up. The 1600 is not the current model, though, and it was pricey---over $1 grand. Prices seem to be coming down now.

I recently purchased the Epson 2450 Photo through B&H (about $380). It comes complete with lighted lid and film holders for 35mm, 120 (any format), and 4X5 sheets. Check B&H or Epson's web sites for lots of detailed info. The results have been very promising because the 2450 has a real resolution of 2400X4800 dpi (which can generate some big files from 4X5 negs.) |
