Can anyone help with information on how to properly mount a Pentac 8" 2.9 lens onto a Graflex Super D.
I have read everything I can find on the webs and am trying not to spend a lot more than I already have in building out this camera by shipping it off to a tech.
So.... I bought a plain board for the Super D and cut it to fit the Pentac. I carved a bit of the edges here and there in the frame of the box so the lens will fit. But I am still encountering problems getting the board to go smoothly into the slots the way it should.
Is there something I am missing?
I did see that Lommen was selling boards specifically made for this lens and camera, but not anymore.
Anyone have any experience with this pair?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Rick

Have you read
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1sPJkp-MdghS2llS1VaRkRIWUk/view?usp=sharing
as I am using it as the reference.
Wind the shutter to T then release the shutter, you should now be able to see the rear of the front standard.
Remove the lens from the lensboard. Install the lens board in the camera.
Install the lens on the board attaching the retaining ring from the rear of the camera or by screwing the lens into the flange that should be mounted on the board properly cocked.

Ahhhh. Makes sense.
Thank you very much.
And as far as calibration etc goes.
I figure I just have to shoot a few pictures to see how it is working or if it is working?

Ok, tried that suggestion:
1. Put the board in place.
2. Put the lens in place.
3. Attached and tightened the ring from the back.

However, it is too deep and gets in the way of the mirror.

Arggggh.

At what focused distance? Cameras are set up at infinity, the shortest focal length usable is based on the lens focused at infinity with the standard fully retracted.
Sounds like you are setting up for portraits exclusively so infinity focus isn't important.

Figure how much extension you need for the mirror to clear the lens. Make an extension board or get a flange and front mount the lens to the board.

Ahhh ha.
Ok, just shows how much of a newbie at this I am.
Great point. I was simply racking all the way in and not thinking of just leaving it out enough so the mirror will clear it.
Thanks.

Got the lens on. Seems good.
Will need some paint or stain for a few nicks and whittles.
One more question.
Is there a way to calibrate the lens?
I know I have to be very careful in focusing as DOF is so toight, but how do I make sure I am beginning with proper calibration?
Thanks. Rick

What is this calibrate of which you speak?

I ask because Graflexes are SLRs. A lens on an SLR is meant to be focused through the lens, not by scale.

For me the important question would be whether the lens will clear the mirror when focused to infinity. For you the important question is whether the lens will clear the mirror when focused to the farthest distance at which you want to use it.

Thanks Dan.
I was panicked a bit because my first picture was quite back focused. So I was mistakenly thinking there must be something wrong with the tool. Instead it's me. Ha! The reason I am working with this camera is that I want to slow down and make a picture. One picture at a time.
So I will do that. I will slow down and focus.
Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.

The optical distance to the ground glass in the viewer must be equal to the optical distance to the film plane in any camera.

Graflex SLR's are built so that the view ground glass is adjustable by 1/8 inch maximum so only fine focus errors can be corrected. The ground side of the glass must face the lens.

Read the instruction manual linked in my first post.
