|

I have a 3x4 Super D that is generally working well, thanks to the help of this forum. Shutter speeds are good. Lately though it hangs up on occasion when I trip the shutter. Not always but enough to be irritating. The mirror goes, lens stops down but curtain doesn't drop. What can cause this? Will a basic shutter CLA fix it?
Thanks. |

Does the L-shaped shutter release lever move when the mirror goes up? Does the shutter work fine when you push on the shutter release by itself? Do you have the little slide bar on the mirror return lever pushed all the way to the left (the I setting rather than the T) so that it properly engages the shutter release? _________________ WilliamH |

Thanks for your response. Let's see:
1. When it hangs up the lever doesn't move, but I can get moving with a nudge. Most of the time it goes as it should.
2. Yes.
3. Yes. |

If the shutter operates properly when the shutter release lever is moved, the shutter itself is fine and you don't need a CLA. The problem is in the shutter controls on the right hand side of the camera. It sounds to me as if the little tab on the I -T slide bar isn't engaging the L shaped shutter release reliably - a 1/32" mismatch is enough to cause trouble. The slide bar can be quite stiff to move (from corrosion or dirt), and this can prevent it from being moved all the way to the left. If this is the case, try putting a drop of penetrating oil on it and working it back and forth to free it up. If this doesn't work a slight bending of the little tab should do it - push the slide to the T position first, then gently use small needle nose pliers. _________________ WilliamH |

Check the bottom edge of the M lever and the pin on the I/T slider for wear. Solder a piece of brass plate to the bottom edge of the M lever or a piece of brass tube to the pin to compensate for the wear. The M lever and pin will tolerate .010 inch / .254 mm from factory original measurements. The bottom edge of the M lever should be straight, not curved; the pin should be round not elliptical. Check the mirror return spring for dried grease and shaft for smooth movement. _________________ The best camera ever made is the one that YOU enjoy using and produces the image quality that satifies YOU. |
