New to forum, new to 16mm and matter of fact don't even own a 16mm film yet.
Singer Graflex 16mm Insta-Load
1) When in Forward/Load/Run should the front supply reel be turning under power or should it be free spinning?
2) When in Forward, without a film loaded, the take up reel mechanism appears to be slipping a lot where the arm drive mechsnism joins with the motor drive mechanism. Appears to be some form of slip clutch. If I hold onto the belt for the front arm its very hard to stop but the rear belt can be stopped with very little pressure. My first thought was some mechanism which tightened everything when a film was sensed but I couldn't find anything like that.
3) Where, if anywhere, can one get parts for these rigs or is this a candidate for the landfill?

Based on memory of 35mm theater projection
Supply reel should turn freely, correction it should have a slight drag allowing drive mechanism to pull film easily into the projection head without the supply spilling off the reel. Take up reel should just take up the slack in the film as it exits the projection head/drive train without pulling on the film even when the reel is full.

If not repairable and not good for parts a metal recycler would be a better choice than the land fill.

In FORWARD mode: Feed reel will not rotate under power but should be able to be turned easily with light drag. Take-up reel has a slip clutch which is sensitive to the weight of the reel and the film on it. With no reel it will be very easy to stop the rotation. With a full 2300 ft reel it should be much harder to stop. Most projectors have some kind of weight-sensing mechanism for the take-up reel but I think the Graflex design is the best.

There are parts available. ICE/Magna-Tech ( http://www.iceco.com/ ) which supplies parts for B&H projectors has just picked up parts for Graflex. There are other sources as well. Are you sure you need parts? What isn't working? Maybe just a cleaning and lubrication is needed? What model machine are we talking about, something in the 1100 series?
