Hi,

I'm fairly green when it comes to LF. I was hoping for a little advice for a wide angle. This lens will go in a 6x12 setup with a helical focus. No ground glass. That said, max aperture is not a huge deal. My priorities are:

1) Price (I don't have much money to spend)
2) Image Quality
3) Size & Weight
I hate putting price at #1, but that's life. I'm after something between 47 and 75mm wide.

So far I've examined the mamiya 75mm f5.6 (from the polaroid 600se) and the 65 f/8 super angulon. Which one will be smaller/lighter (remember that the 75mm already has a helical focus mechanism installed)? What are some other options for me?

All your help is appreciated! Brent.

Hmm. I can't recommend one over the other as I've never used the Mamiya 75. I have used the SA and it's a fine lens, and though hard to find, can be found in a helical mount. I have one, and seen at least two others without looking hard for them. Not much movement with the 65, but I suspect the same with the 75.

In a mount I paid $150 for mine a few years back.

Wow, $150? That's really cheap. Was that the f8 or the f5.6? If you want to part with it... you know who to email! Can you recommend any other glass in this category?

Not to be impolite, but you're cooked. Ain't no inexpensive lenses 75 mm or shorter that will cover 135 mm or more. Or in focusing helicals.

You might look for a 65/8 Ilex, sold under a variety of names. Covers ~ 150 mm, usually less expensive than a 65/8 Super Angulon. And you might look into Schneider and Rodenstock helicals. If you insist on getting a lens in helical, you'll probably have a long wait.

Good luck, have fun,

Dan

helical isn't a problem. I have a friend that can mount anything for me in a helical. I just need the glass. That does, of course, add to the expense, but it's not excessively expensive. Cheers.

"I'm fairly green when it comes to LF."

I too welcome an environmental approach

"I was hoping for a little advice for a wide angle. This lens will go in a 6x12 setup with a helical focus. No ground glass."

Btw, I've settled down to a 47mm - 65mm - 105mm for the Century 2x3" format, after 1.5 years of trying to set up the Century (it's now ready

I wonder if the 75mm may be a better bet for you in terms of balancing out the criteria. The Rodenstock 65mm f4.5 is superlative in all respects (price particularly) and doesn't meet any of the mean criteria you've set. The Schneider 65mm f5.6 is a far better performer than the 65mm f8.0 Angulon if you're interested.

As you don't use the ground-glass, this is an advantage for the 65mm f8.0 which any groundglass user can not live with. For interest, the 65mm f5.6 does indeed cover 6cmx12cm without displacement. I use it for a 2x3" format with movements.

Does anyone know if this S.A. 65mm f8.0 version covers 6x12mm? If it does, there aren't that many apertures to choose from...

Best wishes.

Thanks for the tips. Your html isn't a problem, the message is quite legible!

I've seen some 65 f/8's go on eBay for USD$400 recently and I've decided to get a mamiya 75mm from either a polaroid 600se or a mamiya press camera. I'm going to buy the lens first and hten try to find a mount for it from a "for part" camera. I'll put the mounting flange in the new camera. The advantage of this is that i can then buy a 127mm lens, with the same mounting bayonette and use it too! A very flexible combination.

Any comments?

Hi Brett,

I was trying to use italics for the quotes, however the whole script turned into italics.

That's terrible, unless it comes with a complete Copal shutter. I have a 65mm f8 mounting flange with an aperture scale - it seems redundant without an autoshutter system. Having separate lenses in individual flanges makes for more usefulness, however I find that one lens at a time is more than sufficient. Is that a 127mm Tominon, or an Ektar which you are looking at then?
