I want to remove the front element of my 159mm EWA lens from its Betax 3 shutter. I want to clean the lens, not disassemble the shutter. The lens doesn't budge when twisting it with moderate pressure.
There is a metal ring around the outside of the lens - it's flat on the front surface of the shutter, and it has one small hole (perfect for inserting a paper clip, ice pick, etc.)It's like a retainer ring rather than part of the lens. I don't have anything similar on my Copal, Compur, Graphex or Kodak shutters, so I'm not sure of its purpose.
Does this ring have to come off to release the lens, or do I simply need to apply more pressure? The lens is so small, there's very little to grab.
Thanks,
john

Better to send the lens to SK Grimes. Maybe the shutter could use a clean at the same time as the lens? |

I have a 159 in a Betax #3 here also. Mine is a fairly standard setup with both elements screwed right into the shutter like every other lens I have. No extra ring?
Could your be some kind of push-on filter adapter? If you could supply a pic, it would help a lot...
You are talking about the front, right?

Thanks again.

| John, I can see that holding the front cell, presumbly the rear as well, could be difficult. Have you tried pressing the cell into something soft that won't hurt it, i.e., an automobile tire, and turning the shutter?
Good luck,

No, Dan, I haven't yet tried anything other than moderate hand pressure. I wanted to get an opinion on that "extra" ring before I tried any more force. I'll probably try one of those rubber-like jar opener pads.
The rear element screws right out - the front one is giving me trouble.
Thanks,
John

The pic was great
And sorry, I didn't realize that my lens cap was covering that retaining ring... Do not remove that ring! It holds the front cover on the shutter... So your 159/Betax is quite normal.
Like Dan said, you need something with a firm grip. I haven't had to try it yet, but others have reported the tire trick works well. Just make sure you're turning in the right direction

Thank you very much. Just what I needed to know.
And the tire trick worked, too.

I will second the automobile tire. I tried in vain to remove the rear element(less surface area to grip than a front element) from a Kodak Flash Supermatic until I found a reference to this and other posts about using the tire.
Great to have a little help from your friends. |
