Which "M" sync setting on the Wollensak shutter is used for No. 5 lamps the Red or Black M setting? What is the difference between the two M settings?

Short answer: use black M for no. 5, red M for no. 6. No. 5 peaks at 20 milliseconds. No. 6, 31, 2A, etc. peak at 24-65 milliseconds. (Source: Morgan & Lester, "Graphic Graflex Photography," 10th edition)

Longer answer: "Setting Synchronizer Adjustment: Move synchronizer control lever to position recommended by the lamp manufacturer's flash tables [ha!]. Double 'M' setting: for faster (black) speeds, use black 'M' position, for slower (red) speeds, use corresponding red 'M.' For gas-filled type 'F' lamps or high speed electronic flash not operated by a relay, use 'X-F' setting using corresponding color coded speeds. Place in the 'OFF' position if flash is not being used. When using solenoid be sure synchronizer control lever is in 'off' position unless built-in synchronization is being used to fire and synchronize the lamp."
