Hi,

I was curious if someone could enlighten me on the differences between the Crown # 1 and Crown # 2 tripods.

I was told the # 1 has a tabletop diameter of about 4.5". Although this is larger than diameter of the GV tripod mount (about 3.5"), could a # 1 reasonable support a GV? I was also curious if anyone has used a GV / Bogen 3021 (w/ a 3030 head that has a small, rectangular quick release).

Is there a guestimated maximum weight that the # 1 and # 2 could hold (assuming the wood is strong)?

Thanks,
William

I can tell you from personal experience that you can forget the #1 tripod. It's very small and far from stable. It might have a chance at holding up a Crown, but I sure wouldn't trust it to a View!
I've been told that the #2 is a bit larger and sturdier. It might work for a View, but I haven't been able to get my hands on one yet.

You could easily do a search here for "Crown tripod" and find quite a bit of info...

I believe the 3221 was suggested as being good enough for the Crown/Speed's. But the View's do put a bit more stress on the tripod. I'm sure you can get other opinion here...

Thank you for the responses. That makes sense with the image I saw of the hand under the Crown #1 table. It sounds like I'll be in the Bogen 3040 range.

Merry Christmas.

I'm not sure if I have a # 1 or # 2 but it works well for me with a Speed Graphic and a GVI. The plywood base that the camera mounts on is larger than the GV tripod mount but I just put the screw in tight and then give it a little more by rotating the mount.

I have a Crown #1 and I use it regularly with my GVI and my Anniversary Speed 4x5. The tripod is very lightweight (at least in comparison to the Zone VI standard tripod I use with my 8x10) and seems flimsy, but with the legs extended a bit and splayed out wide, it's never given me a problem or a bit of concern.

I can't imagine any of my ancestors using one of those flimsy tripods to support a 5x7 or 4x5. Personally, I wouldn't set an empty cup of coffee on one. The are certainly cute well varnished and sitting in the corner with a wahtever mounted on them.

Personally again, give me a Bogen, DS or Majestic. If you collect and display, maybe extendable chopsticks are just what you need.
